In every era of a sport there are personalities who shape the sport and raise it to a new level, who influence an entire sport and break boundaries. Anna Gasser is such a personality. The Spark Within is an extraordinary documentary about Anna Gasser's meteoric rise from young gymnast to undoubtedly the most advanced snowboarder of our time. The film highlights the influence that family, injuries and most importantly her inner spark - her Spark Within - have had on her journey thus far. Anna Gasser - The Spark Within will be available for free on Red Bull TV from 16 November 2021. www.redbull.com/annagasser and can be streamed on all major platforms.
The touching documentary, filmed over the course of three years, begins at the 2020 Winter X Games in Aspen (USA), when Anna Gasser starts the competition with a very specific idea. She wants to be the first woman in the world to show the triple underflip in a competition. Her three attempts end in falls, but the audience witnesses her almost warlike determination at that moment. But Anna is so much more than a "warrior." She is a thinker who learns from every experience. She knows how to visualize the moments like no other athlete and only takes calculated risks. "It is one of her strongest qualities and the key to her development" says her partner, pro-snowboarder Clemens Millauer.
Born in 1991, Anna spent most of her young life in the gym competing in gymnastics, before only taking up snowboarding at the age of 18. But then it was love at first sight. As soon as she strapped on her bindings for the first time, the ambitious Carinthian sensed that snowboarding was her thing. Already in 2018, just 9 years after she first felt the board under her feet that would later mean her world, Anna Gasser landed the first cab triple underflip by a woman in the Stubai Prime Park. Nobody knew what Anna was up to that day, not even she was quite sure when she asked her friend Clemens to film the next jump from the kicker's knuckle. "I definitely never thought women could jump triples," recalls Jamie Anderson, 2014 and 2018 Olympic champion in the slopestyle competition. Just one year later, Anna landed the first Cab Double Cork 1260, setting another milestone in snowboarding.
Her rapid rise has not gone unnoticed. In addition to numerous medals, Anna was awarded some of the most prestigious awards, including Austria's Female Athlete of the Year, the ESPY Best Female Action Sports Athlete, Transworld Women's Rider of the Year and Transworld Women's Readers Choice Award.
Despite all her competitive success, the 2018 Winter Olympics were by far the toughest test of her career so far when Gasser had the chance to leave her idol Jamie Anderson behind with the last jump in the competition. Calm and focused, as the Millstätterin is known, she went for it and got with a Cab Double 10 the much desired gold medal.
Anna is leading a new elite of women who represent the progression of snowboarding and are breaking down gender barriers for the next generation of female snowboarders. Anna has already retired the phrase "that was good for a woman," and now she's aiming for gold again at the 2022 Winter Olympics.
The documentary The Spark Within allows deep insights into the life of Anna Gasser. In never-before-published footage, viewers are taken behind the scenes and get to know the 30-year-old Carinthian in an intimate way that was previously reserved for only a few close confidants. "I am incredibly proud to finally be able to present the film. It's great to be able to show the sport that has given me so much from my point of view," Anna adds.
In feature length, you see the two lives Anna has led since the age of 18. On the one hand, the ambitious and persistent pro-snowboarder who set out at an early age to conquer the world and, on the other, the loving, caring daughter, sister and friend who loves and protects her privacy.
